1000 died due to Coronavirus in Italy on a single day

Rome sources stated that cumulative number of coronavirus cases in italy reached 86,498 on friday, exceeding the total figure registered in china, according to data by the Civil Protection Department coordinating the national emergency response. The pandemic also claimed almost 1000 lives, a new single-day record high in fatalities registered here since the outbreak hit the country's northern regions on february 21.

The death toll grew to 9,134, with 50 fatalities occurred on thursday and not yet included in the total figure, national commissioner for the emergency Domenico Arcuri explained at a daily press conference. In unveiling the new statistics, Arcuri took the place of extraordinary commissioner and Civil Protection Department Chief Angelo Borrelli, who was under home confinement for the second day in a row due to fever (but negative for coronavirus).

According to the data, 589 new cured people were registered on a daily basis, bringing total recoveries to 10,950. With 4,401 people tested positive on friday, the number of active coronavirus infections grew to 66,414. "About 6 percent of the total, or 3,732 patients, are currently in intensive care," Arcuri explained. According to epidemiological data released by the National health Institute (ISS) on friday (and based on data up to Thursday), at least 6,414 health professionals were among those positive for the coronavirus so far. "They have an average age of 49 years, and some 35 percent of them are male," the ISS wrote in a bulletin.

Bad news: Coronavirus is spreading rapidly across the world. Good news: Nitrogen dioxide levels are decreasing and the air on Earth is cleaner

Bad news: Coronavirus is spreading rapidly across the world. Good ...As the world scrambles to mitigate the novel global coronavirus pandemic, there is at least one silver lining among the upheaval: air pollution has dropped.

The Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS), an ongoing project led by the European Space Agency (ESA), has spotted a dramatic decline of nitrogen dioxide emissions in China. The gas is formed from burning fossil fuels – cars are particularly good at producing it – and it is responsible for the formation of smog and some acid rain.

Satellite images snapped by ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-5P satellite estimates that the level of nitrogen dioxide in the atmosphere has declined somewhere between 20 to 30 per cent in February, compared to previous measurements for the same month in 2017, 2018, and 2019.

As the coronavirus began spreading in Wuhan, the capital of Hubei province, in late December, the Chinese government ordered its citizens to quarantine themselves at home. That meant employees were no longer going to work at power plants or factories. Fewer cars were on the roads too, all leading to a drop in nitrogen dioxide emissions.

You can watch the levels dwindle in the video below from measurements taken from 20 December 2019 to 16 March 2020.

NASA: Air quality is improving in major U.S. urban areas, but is ...
“We can certainly attribute a part of the nitrogen dioxide emission reduction to the impact of the coronavirus,” said Claus Zehner, ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-5P mission manager. “We currently see around a 40 per cent reduction over Chinese cities, however these are just rough estimates, as weather also has an impact on emissions.”

Scientists are observing similar effects in Italy where Prime Minister Giuseppe Conte has enforced a lockdown of the entire country. The air has gotten clearer particularly in the north, a region that has been inflicted with most COVID-19 cases.

“The decline in nitrogen dioxide emissions over the Po Valley in northern Italy is particularly evident,” Zehner said. “Although there could be slight variations in the data due to cloud cover and changing weather, we are very confident that the reduction in emissions that we can see, coincides with the lockdown in Italy causing less traffic and industrial activities.”

As people in other countries like the US and UK prepare to hunker down at home, ESA’s Copernicus Sentinel-5P Satellite should spot similar declines in nitrogen dioxide across different parts of the world, too. The coronavirus has infected 244,725 people across 178 countries so far, killing more than 10,000, according to Worldometer's stats. ®

Covid-19: Scientists come with a warning for India

Covid-19: Scientists come with a warning for India
A report by a group international scientists warned that if the current trend in the growing number of Covid-19 cases continues, then by mid-May India may face around 100,000 to 13 lakh confirmed cases of coronavirus infection. The report was prepared by an interdisciplinary team of researchers.

The report warned that although India has done well in containing the pandemic when compared to other countries, still India is critically missing a key component in this assessment — the number of truly affected cases. This factor depends on the extent of testing, the accuracy of the test results, and the frequency and scale of testing of people who may have been exposed but do not show symptoms.

The researchers said that till now India has tested relatively small number of people. In the absence of widespread testing, it is impossible to quantify the magnitude of ‘community transmission. The researchers asked to implement “draconian measures” to stop the spreading of the disease.

The scientists used data on the number of reported cases in India up to March 16, and applied tools of modelling disease transmission. They estimated the theoretical number of infected at any given time, and compared projections for India against the US and Italy.

Citing World Bank data, they said the number of hospital beds per 1,000 people in India is only 0.7, compared to 6.5 in France, 11.5 in South Korea, 4.2 in China, 3.4 in Italy, and 2.8 in the US. Due to this the predicted surge in the number of cases may make it impossible for the healthcare providers in India to support the sheer volume of cases.

The number of coronavirus infected cases in India so far is 562, while the death toll due to COVID-19 in the country is revised down to nine, according to Health Ministry data.

Coronavirus Australia: Travellers can't greet their loved ones ...
Police have issued an “unprecedented” warning to friends and family who may be planning to greet their loved ones as they fly back into Australia.

NSW Police say all travellers returning to Sydney International Airport from 6am this morning would not be able to see or have physical contact with loved ones upon their arrival.

“There are no areas in the Sydney International Airport in which family and friends will be able to see the returned travellers or make contact with them,” the statement said.

"The travellers will be processed discreetly before being taken to their nominated hotels.

"They will then be able to get in touch with family and friends."

Officers said they understood it was an "unprecedented" step, but it was vital to "stop the spread of COVID-19".

It comes as the first Australians have been shuttled into makeshift quarantine facilities after arriving at the airport, as the government cracks down on self-isolation rules.

Anyone arriving in Australia must now be quarantined in hotels for two weeks before they are allowed to return home.

With two-thirds of Australia’s coronavirus cases from or closely linked to overseas travellers, vacant hotels and other accommodation services are being used to ensure no more travellers have a chance to spread the disease.

Returned travellers will live out their 14 days of quarantine in state-funded hotel rooms, with doors guarded by state police, defence personnel or private security guards.

In Sydney alone, 3000 people landed this morning.

“The 14 days, I am sure, will be a challenge for them and perhaps the food is not up to standard or they feel that the bed is not as comfortable as their own.

“They need to understand that we are trying to protect the community of NSW.”

Meanwhile, other Australians aren’t taking the self-isolation rules quite so seriously.

A man and a woman have been fined $1000 each after allegedly ignoring their 14-day coronavirus self-isolation period following their arrival from Thailand.

Police said they issued a 22-year-old man and a 23-year-old woman with Penalty Infringement Notices yesterday after speaking to the couple at an address in Hillvue, western NSW, where they had been required to quarantine for two weeks.

Officers said the pair, who arrived in Sydney on a flight from Thailand on Tuesday, had travelled from Hillvue to Boggabri on Friday, where they came into contact with another person.

The two were each issued with a $1000 fine for failing to comply with a direction under Section 7 of the NSW Public Health Act.

Police struggle to enforce India's sweeping virus lockdown ...
There are only 11 such countries left in the world where Corona has not been reached yet, in which most of the countries have not heard the names till date. The names of these 11 countries are Tuvalu, Palau, Vanuatu, Timorese-Leste, Solomon Islands, Sierra Leone, Samoa, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Saint Kittis and Nevis. Corona has not had any effect in these countries yet.

This is because these countries are cut off globally and there is not much movement of people from other countries.
